• UAE residents: a valid UAE driving licence and your Emirates ID.

The Geely Emgrand - What You Are Actually Getting

A compact four-door saloon with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, front-wheel drive, and an automatic gearbox. Around 100-120 horsepower depending on the trim. Five seats and a boot that is genuinely usable.

The Emgrand surprises people. Geely is a Chinese manufacturer that most Europeans have never heard of - and it owns Volvo. The build quality on the recent Emgrand is considerably better than the badge suggests, and the equipment levels embarrass cars costing more: large touchscreen, reversing camera, cruise control, decent air conditioning as standard.

It is not fast and it is not exciting. The 1.5-litre engine is adequate rather than eager, and the CVT gearbox drones under hard acceleration.

What it is: quiet at cruising speed, comfortable, economical on regular 95 petrol, and much better finished inside than a Yaris or a Sunny at the same money.

The honest summary: if you are renting an economy car in Dubai and you have a choice between an Emgrand and one of the older Japanese budget saloons, take the Emgrand. It is the newer, better-equipped, more comfortable car for the same price.

Emgrand, Yaris, or Sunny?

These three occupy almost exactly the same price bracket in Dubai and the choice is mostly about what you value.

The Toyota Yaris has the reliability reputation and the resale-value halo. It is a known quantity, and if you have driven one you know what you are getting. It is also the least interesting car of the three inside.

The Nissan Sunny is the cheapest of the three to rent and the most basic. It does the job.

The Geely Emgrand is the newest design, the best equipped, and the nicest place to sit. Bigger screen, better materials, more standard kit. The trade-off is an unfamiliar badge and a slightly less refined gearbox.

If you want the safest, most predictable choice, take the Yaris. If you want the cheapest, take the Sunny. If you want the most car for the money and you do not care what badge is on the bonnet, take the Emgrand.
