Driving wrong is an expensive lesson

The UAE takes driving paperwork seriously. Police can stop you and ask for documents anywhere, and getting it sorted before you drive saves you the trouble below.

    Common questions

Over 50 countries are on the UAE exchange list. If yours is one, you swap your licence for a UAE one with no theory or road test, usually the same day in Dubai, from about AED 1,050 plus the eye test.

Only if your country is not on the Markhoos list, or your licence is not printed in English or Arabic. Either way, as a visitor this applies to a rental car, whose insurance covers any driver with a valid licence.

Not unless the owner adds you to their insurance, or the car belongs to a first-degree relative. Otherwise you are driving uninsured, so most visitors rent.

Up to 3 months, or the length of your visit, on a valid home licence, plus an International Driving Permit if your country needs one.

How we verify this: Country statuses, fees and timings on this page are based on the UAE Ministry of Interior Markhoos initiative, RTA Dubai and TAMM exchange guidance, and 2026 UAE transport reporting. Recognition and exchange lists change, and figures vary by emirate and case, so treat the amounts here as guideposts and confirm your own situation with the RTA, MOI or your emirate’s traffic authority before you apply.
