The Nissan Magnite -What You Are Actually Getting

A 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, most commonly turbocharged, driving the front wheels through an automatic CVT. Around 100 horsepower. Five doors, five seats, a raised ride height and a boot that is genuinely usable for the size.

It is not fast, and it is not quiet. A small three-cylinder engine working hard on Sheikh Zayed Road makes itself heard. Be clear-eyed about that if you are commuting long distances daily.

What it is: extremely economical, easy to park, air-conditioned, and high enough off the ground to see over traffic -which in Dubai matters more than people admit. It runs on regular 95 petrol and sips it.

The interior is plain. The materials are cheap. Nobody rents a Magnite for the cabin. But it is well-equipped for the money, and on the newer cars the touchscreen and reversing camera are standard.

The honest summary: it is a budget crossover that does the job of moving you around Dubai cheaply, from a slightly higher seat than a Yaris or a Baleno. If that is what you want, it is the right choice and there is no reason to spend more.

Magnite, Yaris, or Baleno?

These three occupy the same price bracket in Dubai and the choice comes down to what you want from the shape.

The Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Baleno are lower -a sedan and a hatchback respectively. Both are marginally cheaper to rent and slightly more economical. The Yaris has the biggest boot of the three.

The Magnite sits higher. You get a better view over traffic, easier access in and out, and something that looks like an SUV for economy-car money. That raised seating position is the entire reason to choose it.

If you want the cheapest possible car, take the Baleno. If you want the biggest boot, take the Yaris. If you want to sit up high without paying SUV money, take the Magnite.

If you want an actual SUV with real capability, none of these is the answer -look at the Suzuki Jimny or a Nissan Kicks.
