Export process and requirements

The export process follows a set order, and it differs for used and brand-new cars.

For a used car registered in the UAE, first clear any fines or finance, since a car with unpaid Salik, traffic fines or an active loan cannot be exported until these are settled, with a bank No-Objection Certificate (NOC) where it was financed. Sports cars are financed more often than average, so check this early. The car is then de-registered for export and the RTA issues temporary export plates. The RTA also issues the Export Certificate, which cancels the local registration and replaces the used-car registration card (Mulkiya). The export is declared to Dubai Customs, and GCC destinations need a Vehicle Clearance Certificate (VCC) to register the car on arrival.

For a new 0 km car that has never been registered in the UAE, there is no Mulkiya and no RTA de-registration, since there is nothing on the local register to cancel. It moves on the dealer's purchase invoice as proof of ownership, a Certificate of Origin, the Dubai Customs export declaration, a VCC, and the Bill of Lading. Exports out of the UAE are usually zero-rated for VAT when the export is completed and documented in time, and the dealer can confirm how this applies to your purchase.

Two destination rules matter more on this car than on almost anything else we export, and both should be checked before you pay a deposit.

Drive side. Mustangs sold in the Gulf are left-hand drive. A great many export destinations, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Pakistan, Bangladesh and others, drive on the left and require right-hand-drive vehicles. Several of them prohibit left-hand-drive imports outright rather than merely discouraging them, and conversion is neither cheap nor, in most cases, legally accepted. If your country is right-hand drive, a Dubai Mustang is very likely not importable at all, whatever the price. Confirm this first, before anything else.

Engine displacement duty. Many countries assess vehicle import duty and annual road tax on engine size rather than value, and the thresholds are usually set well below five litres. On a 5.0-litre V8 that can mean a duty bill approaching or exceeding the purchase price of the car, and a recurring annual tax to match. This is the single most common reason a Mustang export stops making financial sense. Where displacement duty is steep, the 2.3-litre EcoBoost is often the version that actually works, and it is worth pricing both before deciding. Ask your customs agent for the rate at your specific engine size, not a general figure.

For a new 0 km car (never registered):

• Dealer purchase invoice as proof of ownership, in place of the Mulkiya.
