Tank is the off-road SUV brand of Great Wall Motor, the Chinese car maker better known as GWM, and in Dubai a Tank for sale is almost always a Tank 300 or a Tank 500. A Tank car looks like a traditional square four by four, but the engines, screens and driver aids are new, and the badge on the tailgate tells you only half of what you are buying. The other half is the engine and the specification, and those two decide what a used Tank is worth.

Tank cars in the UAE are still young, so the used market is small and much of it sits close to new. Some listings are cars that a dealer has registered and moved into the used section with delivery kilometres on the clock. Others came from outside the region. Tank 300 or Tank 500

The Tank 300 is the smaller of the two, a five seat SUV with upright, boxy styling. In the UAE it is sold as the Challenger and the Conqueror, and the Conqueror is the better equipped of the pair. It suits a buyer who wants something easy to park in a mall car park but tall and solid on the motorway.

The Tank 500 is the bigger car, with three rows and seven seats, and it is aimed at families who would otherwise look at a full size Japanese SUV. It sits on a separate steel ladder frame with the body bolted on top, the old way of building a large four by four. Its UAE trims are called Signature and Prestige, and the Prestige carries more equipment.

If a seller offers a Tank model you do not recognise, ask for a photo of the Mulkiya, which shows the make and model exactly as the RTA registered it.

Petrol, V6 or Hybrid: Reading the Badge

This is the question most listings do not answer. The Tank 500 is sold here with a 3.0 litre twin turbo V6 that carries a small 48 volt assist, and also as a hybrid that pairs a 2.0 litre turbo engine with a larger battery and electric motor. Both burn petrol and both use a nine speed automatic, so a card that says "petrol" can describe either car. GWM uses the Signature and Prestige names with both engines, which means the trim name does not settle it either.

The Tank 300 follows the same idea on a smaller scale: a 2.0 litre turbo petrol in most cars, with a Conqueror Hybrid sold alongside it. Ask the seller for the engine code or a photo of the engine bay, and check the instrument screen for a hybrid power meter. If the paperwork and the car disagree, take that as a reason to slow down.

The engine changes more than the fuel bill. A hybrid has a high voltage battery whose warranty may run on a different clock from the rest of the car, and the V6 needs different servicing. Price two Tank cars only after you know they share an engine.

Where Tank Came From

The first Tank was not a Tank at all. GWM showed the car in 2020 as the Wey Tank 300, under its premium Wey badge, and in 2021 it split Tank off as a brand of its own for off-road focused SUVs. Every GWM Tank since then has kept that brief. The Tank 500 shares its frame with GWM's Cannon Alpha pickup, which tells you something about how the car was meant to be used.

For a used buyer, two things follow. GWM is a large and long established maker, so the cars come from an experienced manufacturer and not from a start up. GCC Spec Against Other Specs

Some Tank cars offered in the UAE were built for another market. A listing marked "Other" specs can mean a car made for China or a neighbouring region, with different equipment, different software and menus that may need to be switched into English. None of that has to rule a car out, but it changes the value and sometimes the warranty position.

Ask the seller directly whether the car is GCC spec and whether it was sold new by the official dealer. The Mulkiya, the purchase invoice and the chassis number answer most of it, and the authorised service centre can confirm the rest from the chassis number in a phone call.

What Sets the Asking Price on a Tank

The model moves a used Tank more than anything else, because a seven seat Tank 500 and a five seat Tank 300 sit at different levels. After that come the engine, the trim and the specification. A GCC spec hybrid Prestige with dealer service stamps and factory warranty left is a different car from an imported V6 with a thin file, even though the listing photos look alike.

• Look for sand in the spare wheel well, the door seals and behind the bumpers, and ask the owner how the car was used.

• On a hybrid, ask for a battery health report from the authorised service centre and watch for warning lights on start up.

• On a V6, listen to it from a cold start and drive it in slow traffic as well as on the motorway. The gearbox should change smoothly at low speed.

• Try every camera, the screen and the driver aids, and check that the menus are in a language you can use.

• Compare the service stamps with the kilometres, then book an independent inspection and keep the report.

Warranty, Dealer Servicing and Parts

A Tank sold new by the official UAE dealer comes with factory cover, and on a young used car much of it may be left. Give the chassis number to the authorised service centre and ask in writing what cover remains, whether it moves to a new owner, and whether the hybrid battery has its own terms. A missed service or an import history can shorten or end it.

Because the brand is new here, it is worth calling the parts desk before you buy and asking about the cost and wait for common service items, tyres in the factory size and a windscreen. On a car that was imported, ask whether the local network will service it at all.

Paperwork for the RTA Transfer

Two checks come before any money moves: the fines on the plate, and whether a bank still holds a loan against the car. If it does, the seller settles it and collects a clearance certificate, and the transfer cannot happen without that letter.

On the day, you need your Emirates ID and insurance already taken out in your name, and the seller needs the Mulkiya and their own Emirates ID. A Tank that has never carried UAE plates needs its first registration papers in order before the RTA will register it, so raise that early with any seller of an other specs car.
