BMW M3 Competition for export from Dubai: two generations carry the name, and they are not alike

Competition is the name BMW gives to the more powerful, better-equipped version of the M3. The BMW M3 Competition is a real performance car in its own right, with a unique engine, gearbox tuning and chassis settings, and it should not be confused with a standard 3 Series wearing an M Sport kit. The word that matters most when you look at a BMW M3 Competition for export from Dubai is the generation, because the name has been used on two quite different cars.

The newer one belongs to the G80 generation and is the one most listings mean. An earlier car, the F80, offered a Competition Package as an option. The used BMW M3 Competition page for Dubai covers cars sold for local use in the UAE, and the rest of this page deals with a car going abroad.

The word Competition also tells you what a car is not. It is not the plain entry M3, and it is not one of the limited editions that BMW later placed above it. It sits in the middle of the M3 line, which is why so many Dubai listings carry the name and why it is worth checking the details behind it.

F80 and G80: which M3 Competition are you looking at

The F80 M3 was built from 2014 and ended in 2018. It used a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine and was offered with a manual or a dual-clutch gearbox. From 2016 BMW offered a Competition Package that added power and revised the chassis, and the car is sometimes called an M3 Competition even though it was an option on the standard model.

The G80 arrived for the 2021 model year. It has a larger, more aggressive front grille, a new twin-turbo straight-six engine and an eight-speed automatic gearbox in the Competition. Rear-wheel drive was the starting point. BMW then added an all-wheel-drive version, known as M xDrive, to the Competition, and the Touring estate followed as a separate body.

In 2024 the G80 range received its mid-life update, with new headlights, a different lighting signature and a small increase in power on the Competition. So a G80 may be before or after that update, and the difference affects resale. Ask for the model year and check the front lights against BMW's pictures.

What Competition adds over a standard M3

The Competition has more power than the standard M3, plus the automatic gearbox, adjusted suspension settings and extra equipment. In the G80 range it became the mainstream version, so most cars you will find are Competitions.

The difference matters at resale, because the badge on the boot tells a buyer what to expect, and a car without the badge is a lesser model. Check the boot lid, the VIN and the engine plate. The interior should also carry the right seat trim and the right M details.

Colour and trim also help identify a car. M3 interiors have specific seat designs, a particular steering wheel with red markings and M buttons on the wheel, and a start button with an M design. If those are missing or look aftermarket, ask why.

Be careful about replica cars. Standard 3 Series and 4 Series models are sometimes dressed with M3 body parts and badges. A genuine M3 has its own engine, brakes and body panels, and a BMW dealer can confirm what a VIN says. Do this before sending a deposit.

Four-door body, seats and how the car is used

The M3 Competition is a four-door saloon with seats for five, although the rear is cramped for adults on longer trips. The boot is a normal size for the class. The Touring version, an estate, is a separate body that exists only in the G80 generation and was added after the saloon.

The car is a performance machine, and use matters more than on a plain saloon. Ask how the car was driven, whether it has been tracked, and what the tyres and brakes look like. Track use is not a reason to avoid a car, but it is a reason to see records of brake and fluid changes.

For shipping the car is a mid-sized saloon, so freight is not unusual. Low front splitters can catch on steep loading ramps. Mention the aero parts to the forwarder, and make sure any carbon fibre parts are photographed before loading, so that damage claims can be checked.

What sets the price of an M3 Competition sold for export

Generation leads. A G80 Competition is priced well above an F80, and a car from after the 2024 update is above one from before. Within the G80, the M xDrive version and the Touring are priced differently from the rear-drive saloon.

Mileage and history matter more than on an ordinary saloon, because a high-performance engine suffers if it is not looked after. Dealer stamps, oil analysis and records of fluid changes are all worth asking about. A car with a recent timing or cooling system service is worth more.

Options and condition come next. Carbon ceramic brakes, the carbon roof, carbon seats and special paints raise the price if genuine. Damage to the front splitter, wheels and bumpers is common and shows in photographs. Ask for close-ups.

Age of the tyres is a small detail that often gets overlooked. Performance tyres harden and lose grip after a few years even with plenty of tread, and a set for the rear axle on this car is costly. Check the date code on the sidewall and allow for replacement if they are old.

Last is the landed cost. A high-output engine can fall into a higher tax band at the destination, and shipping adds to the total. Calculate the final figure before you compare listings.

Gulf-spec M3 cars and cars built for other markets

A Gulf-spec M3 Competition is set up for heat, with cooling and air conditioning suited to the region, and its service history sits with the regional BMW network. It also carries local lighting and a speed readout set for the Gulf.

Heat is a factor on a car with this much power. Cooling systems, oil temperature and the lifespan of rubber parts are tested harder in the Gulf. A well-serviced car handles it, but ask whether the cooling system and the engine mounts have been checked, and whether the car was garaged.

Cars built for Europe or America differ in several ways. Some have different headlight patterns, different engine tuning because of local rules, and different options. A car built for another market and sold into the UAE through a private import is not unusual for performance models.

If you plan to register the car in a country with strict rules, a Europe-specification car may be easier to approve than a Gulf one, or the reverse. Ask the destination authority, and ask the seller for the first sales record so that you can match it.

Buying an M3 Competition in Dubai for export, in sequence

Check your destination first. Age limits, emissions standards, the steering side and port documents decide whether an M3 can be registered, and some places add tax according to engine output.

Browse the cars listed here and contact a few sellers. OneClickDrive is a car marketplace connecting you with verified UAE sellers. We take no commission and do not inspect, document or ship cars. Terms are agreed between you and the seller.

Ask for the registration document, VIN, service history and detailed photographs, including the brakes and the underside. Have a BMW M specialist inspect the car, either in person or through a trusted contact. On a performance car the inspection fee is small beside the risk.

The seller cancels the UAE registration and provides export documents. Your forwarder arranges the shipping. Record the VIN, the price and the timetable in a written agreement, pay a deposit, and keep the balance until the documents are ready.

Age limits, emissions rules and final checks

A G80 is a recent car, so most age limits will not stop it. An F80 is older and might be affected, depending on the rule. Ask the destination authority whether age counts from the build date or from first registration.

Emissions are the more likely problem. A high-output petrol engine may face extra tax or tighter limits in some markets, and a few places restrict performance cars outright. Confirm the position with the authority before agreeing a price.

Steering in every UAE car is on the left. If your country registers only right-hand-drive vehicles, the car cannot be used there, and conversion is not sensible on a car this complex.

Keep the order of the paperwork in mind too. A performance car is more likely than a normal one to have passed through several owners, and each transfer should show on the registration history. Missing transfers deserve an explanation.

Before you pay, confirm that there are no fines or finance on the car, that the VIN matches every document, and that there is no accident history. Ask whether the car has been tracked, whether any engine or gearbox work has been done, and whether it has had any software changes. Get each answer in writing.

Questions fréquentes

What is the difference between an M3 and an M3 Competition?

The Competition has more power, an automatic gearbox in the current generation and uprated chassis settings. In the G80 range it is the mainstream version. Check the badge, the VIN and the engine plate.

Which generations of M3 Competition exist?

The F80, built from 2014 to 2018, offered a Competition Package from 2016. The G80 arrived in 2021 as the Competition and was updated in 2024. The generation affects price and age rules.

Is the M3 Competition rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive?

The G80 Competition started as rear-wheel drive. An M xDrive all-wheel-drive version was added later. Ask the seller which one it is and confirm from the registration document.

Can I tell a genuine M3 from a dressed-up 3 Series?

Yes. A genuine M3 has its own engine, brakes and body panels, and a BMW dealer can confirm the model from the VIN. Do the check before you pay a deposit.

Can I export an M3 Competition from Dubai?

Usually yes, if your country accepts a left-hand-drive car of that age and engine type. Check the emissions and tax rules with the authority. The seller and your forwarder arrange the registration cancellation and export papers.

What decides the price of an M3 Competition for export from Dubai?

Generation, mileage, service history, options and the condition of the wheels and brakes. Shipping and import tax at your end also affect the cost. Look at several listings.

Does track use matter?

It can. Hard use wears brakes, tyres and fluids faster. Ask for records of the changes, and have a specialist look at the car.

Does OneClickDrive handle shipping and inspection?

No. We bring buyers and verified UAE sellers together without charging commission. We neither inspect nor document nor ship cars. The seller and your forwarder take care of those.
