The Prado and the Land Cruiser are not the same vehicle

Start here, because it decides everything else. Toyota sells this car regionally as the Land Cruiser Prado, so both names sit on the same tailgate, and in North America the current Prado is sold as the plain Land Cruiser. An imported car badged Land Cruiser can therefore be a Prado, and a local car badged Land Cruiser Prado is not the larger vehicle some buyers think they are paying for.

Read the chassis number and the registration card. Never the badge. Get that right and the rest of the search is straightforward, because you will finally be comparing the same car against itself.

Market pricing and availability

Stock is deep on this model, which is unusual for a large four wheel drive and works entirely in your favour. Used Toyota Prado Dubai listings run from long serving high mileage cars through to recent examples, so there is no single price to quote. What a Toyota Prado second hand is worth here depends far more on condition and history than on the year on the registration card.

Maintained high mileage cars sit at the value end and are bought on paperwork. The middle holds the bulk of the market. Recent low mileage cars command a premium and move fast.

Generations and engines

2024 brought a full new generation on a new platform. Everything up to 2023 is the previous car, so two quite different vehicles share the result set and you should decide which one you are shopping before you filter on anything else.

On the previous generation the local engines were a 2.7 four cylinder, a 4.0 V6 and a 2.8 turbo diesel. The V6 is what most buyers wanted and the thirstiest. Diesels here are usually imports. From 2024 the range narrows to one 2.4 turbo four with an eight speed automatic.

Body styles, seats and trim names

A short body genuinely exists alongside the long one, and buyers often call it a two door because they do not count the tailgate. Five and seven seat cars are both common. Check which you have, because the third row changes the boot completely and rear air conditioning is a separate system that fails quietly.

Trim names are close to useless across the years here. TX, TXL, VX, VXR, EXR, GXR, GXL, Limited and Adventure all appear and the equipment behind each has moved. Compare the specification fitted, not the letters.

Running costs and resale

This is a heavy four wheel drive and it costs what one costs. Fuel is the obvious item, especially on the V6. Tyres are large, brakes work hard and insurance sits above a saloon. Against that, parts and expertise are everywhere here and independent specialists are genuinely good.

Get underneath with a torch and look into the seams. Check the underbody for scrapes, the suspension bushes for splits and the towing point for wear.

Desert use is not a reason to walk away. Plenty of these cars earned their living that way and were looked after. It is a reason to price the car differently and inspect it harder.

Test the screen and everything wired into it

Many Prados here have had the factory head unit swapped for an aftermarket screen, often so the car can be advertised with phone connectivity. Ask whether the unit is original, then bring your own phone and test Apple CarPlay yourself.

A poor installation shows up in four places. Steering wheel controls stop working properly, the reversing camera does not appear when you select reverse, the parking sensors go quiet, and the factory amplifier gets bypassed so the sound goes flat. Check all four before you discuss price.

Service history, specification origin and warranty

You want unbroken history with invoices behind the stamps, and on a large four wheel drive you want the expensive items in that file: gearbox and transfer case fluid, differential oil, brakes and suspension. A car showing only oil changes across a long life has been kept running, not maintained. If it is a recent enough car to still be inside factory cover, the agency will confirm the balance against the chassis number and tell you whether that balance comes with the vehicle.

A GCC specification car is built for this heat and has the simplest supply of parts. Imports are common on this model, particularly diesels and anything wearing North American badging, so ask outright and confirm against the chassis number. That number also returns accident history and any finance still registered against the car.

Get the car inspected before you pay a deposit

Finance, EMI and no down payment offers

Have an Emirates NBD car loan approved before you start viewing. On a vehicle at this level the balances are large enough that the approval, not the advert, sets your real ceiling, and knowing it stops you negotiating on a car you were never going to buy. The estimated EMI under each listing makes the monthly figure easy to compare.

Ask about no down payment offers before you talk price. On a vehicle this expensive the deposit is the part that stops most people, and a few showrooms hold bank arrangements that remove it. You will not see it advertised, terms differ by showroom, and it cannot apply to a private sale between two individuals or to a car bought for export. Where finance is outstanding, the bank issues a liability letter and then a clearance certificate before ownership moves, for a private owner and a showroom on dealer floor plan finance alike.

Paperwork on the day

Two things trip people up here. The odometer reading written onto the transfer has to match the car you just drove, and a Prado bought for export leaves on a different route with different paperwork, so say which you are doing beforehand. Otherwise it is the original Mulkiya, the seller's Emirates ID, your identification, live insurance in your name, the RTA, and every fine cleared by the seller first.
