First generation, second generation, and the facelifts in each

The first XF went on sale in 2008, a swoopy saloon that replaced the S-Type and brought Jaguar's design in a new direction. Jaguar launched an all-new second generation in 2015, internally the X260, built on the same lightweight aluminium architecture as the XE. The Sportbrake is the estate. It has a larger load area and a flat floor, which makes it a family or business option, though it is far less common in the Gulf. If a listing says nothing, assume a saloon, but ask, because the body style is shown on the registration card.

The XF is a long, low car. That helps stability and ride quality but means it needs more space at the dock than a compact saloon, and the front lip is easy to scrape on ramps. Look at underside photographs and ask the forwarder how the car will be loaded.

Production has ended, and Jaguar has said it will focus on electric cars from now on. That does not make the XF rare, but it does mean no new stock is being added. Resale in a market without a strong Jaguar dealer network can be slow, so consider who will buy the car from you when the time comes, and how easy servicing will be.

What sets the price of an XF sold for export

Generation sits above everything else. A second-generation car costs far more than a first, and a post-2020 car more than an early second-generation one. After that the engine matters: V8 and supercharged V6 first-generation cars can be cheap to buy and costly to run, while a two-litre second-generation car is the reverse.

Mileage and service history are important on a car of this size. A full record from a dealer or reputable specialist carries weight, particularly on the older V8 cars where deferred maintenance is the main risk. Trim and options add to the figure but less than generation and engine do.

Check the condition of the wheels, the leather and the paint on the lower body. Finally, include the freight. A mid-size saloon is neither the cheapest nor the dearest thing to ship, but the cost to a far port can be a notable part of the landed price.

A car sold through the Gulf distributor was built for heat and has a regional service history. Its air conditioning, cooling and filtration suit the climate, and its dashboard and instrument units follow Gulf practice. Those cars carry value because buyers can trust the history.

Some XFs were imported into the UAE from Europe or elsewhere. They may have diesel engines, different headlight patterns and kilometre or mile speedometers. They can be a good match for a destination that follows the same rules as the car's original market.

Look closely at electrical items before buying.
