What the Ram name covers, and why the number matters

Ram is an American truck brand, and the character of the range is full size. Even the lightest Ram pickup is a big vehicle by the standards of most import markets. That is the appeal for a dealer whose customers want presence and carrying space, and it is also why these trucks do not suit every market. Check the fit before you check the price.

The 1500 is the light pickup and the volume truck of the line. The 2500 is the heavy duty pickup above it, with a choice of petrol or diesel power. The 5500 is a different kind of vehicle again: a commercial chassis cab, sold as a cab on a frame so that a body can be fitted behind it. Treat them as three products.

The older Dodge name is the other source of confusion. Listings and customer messages still use it for these trucks. Read it as the same family and confirm the model from the registration document.

Engine, trim and equipment details of the Ram

The trucks listed for export here are petrol automatics with four doors. Most are shown as GCC spec and left hand drive,. A smaller number are marked as other specs, and the listing does not say which market the truck was built for. Ask the seller before you assume, because an American, Canadian or Gulf build can differ in lighting, emissions equipment and the language of the dashboard.

The 1500 is where the choice of engine has moved around. The Hemi V8 returned to the 1500 after the turbocharged inline six had replaced it, so a recent truck may carry either, and the two drive and fuel up differently. The 2500 is offered with a 6.4 litre Hemi V8 on petrol or a 6.7 litre Cummins turbo diesel. The listed 2500 trucks are petrol, so a dealer who wants the diesel needs to say so early.

Trims in the listings include the Rebel crew cab, and the TRX appears at the top of the 1500 range. The TRX is a supercharged truck with its own demands on fuel and tyres, and it has its own guide. How buying a Ram in Dubai for export works

Check what your market actually sells before you buy the engine.

Put the destination check before the sale, not after it. A truck that cannot be registered at home is the one expensive mistake in this trade.

The stock that is listed leans heavily to the 1500, with a small number of 2500 and TRX trucks beside it, and the mix changes. Compare like with like. Two listings with the same model name can differ by engine, cab, bed, spec and condition, and a headline gap between them usually has a reason you can find in the listing. When it does not, ask the seller.

The 5500, and why it is a separate decision

The 5500 draws a lot of attention from importers, and it deserves a separate answer. It is a chassis cab. Ram's chassis cab range covers the 3500, 4500 and 5500. The buyer is typically an operator or a body builder, not a private owner, and the finished truck is whatever body gets fitted behind the cab: a flatbed, a tipper, a service body, a tow truck.

That changes the checks. For a pickup you look at the cab and the bed. For a 5500 you look at the weight rating, the engine, what body is already fitted if any, and whether your destination registers a truck of that class at all. Commercial classes can follow different rules from passenger pickups, so the question for your customs authority is not whether it accepts a Ram but whether it accepts this weight class.
