The ROX 01 is a full size, three row SUV that runs on electric motors and carries a 1.5 litre turbo petrol engine whose only job is to charge the battery. A ROX 01 used in Dubai is usually young, often still under factory cover, and big enough for a family of six or seven. Most used ROX 01 buyers want to know two things first: how healthy the battery is, and whether the car has six seats or seven.

ROX 01 or Adamas: which car is in the advert

ROX sold the 01 first, and in China it was also badged the Polestones 01. The Adamas that followed is its facelift: a body coloured grille surround, a closed honeycomb panel under the headlights and a reworked interior, on the same range extender layout. It came to the Middle East before China, so both names are on sale here at once.

Sellers do mix them up. If the car in front of you has the newer grille and cabin, it belongs with the ROX Adamas listings, and you should compare it with those rather than with an earlier 01. The registration card and the chassis number settle it.

01, VIP, Standard and Captain: reading the version name

Listings for this car carry several version names, and they do not mean the same thing from one seller to the next. The common ones you will see are:

• 01, used on its own by many sellers whatever the specification.

• 01 Standard.

• 01 VIP.

• 01 Captain.

Some sellers also write the name as ROX 1, which is the same car. Do not price a car on the word in the title. Ask for the original specification sheet or check the equipment yourself: the seats, the screens, the driver assist features and whether it has one electric motor or two. Two cars with the same version name can be quite different inside.

How the 1.5 turbo range extender drives

There is no mechanical link between the petrol engine and the wheels. Electric motors move the car, and the dual motor versions drive all four wheels with a lot of power for an SUV this size. When the battery runs down, the 1.5 litre turbo engine starts and feeds it, and you mostly hear it rather than feel it.

That gives the 01 two lives. Charged every night, it covers a normal Dubai week on electricity. On a long run to Al Ain or Fujairah it behaves like a large hybrid, filling up at an ordinary petrol station. The electric range on a full charge is a little over 200 km on the WLTC test cycle, depending on the battery fitted, and real range in summer heat with the air conditioning working hard is lower.

Six seats, seven seats and the third row

The ROX 01 was built with two seating layouts. One has a three seat bench in the middle row for seven seats in all. The other has two separate chairs in the middle with a gap between them, which makes six seats and an easier walk through to the back.

Adults fit in the third row of either, but the six seat car is easier to get in and out of every day. Check the seating capacity on the Mulkiya, count the seats in the photos and climb into the back on the viewing. Listing titles do not always say which layout a car has, and it is the one thing you cannot change later.

Charging a ROX 01 at home and on the road

A wall charger at home is what makes this car cheap to run. If you live in a villa, that is simple to arrange. If you rent an apartment, ask your building about charging before you buy, and look at the public chargers near your home and office.

Check which charging port the car has, and that the cable and any adapter come with it. Imported cars and UAE cars can differ here. A car with no working way to charge at home will spend most of its life on petrol, which defeats the point of the electric drive.

Running costs on a second hand ROX 01

Electricity at home costs far less per kilometre than petrol, so the more you charge, the lower your running costs. Servicing is lighter than on a conventional petrol SUV, because the petrol engine runs less and there is no conventional gearbox to look after.

The costs to plan for are tyres, which wear quickly on a heavy SUV with this much torque, insurance on a car of this value, and Salik if you commute on toll roads. Parts are handled by the UAE distributor, which runs a regional parts centre in Jebel Ali, so routine items should not mean a long wait.

What sets the price of a used ROX 01

The used ROX 01 price in the UAE depends on version and seat layout first, then kilometres, then condition. A car with plenty of factory warranty left on the battery and drive system is worth more than one near the end of its cover, and a full record of servicing at the official centre helps a lot.

Used ROX 01 Dubai listings include cars sold new through the UAE distributor and cars imported privately, so check whether the Mulkiya and the specification say GCC. A GCC car sold here is generally simpler to service, and its resale is easier than an import's. Because the Adamas is now on sale alongside it, the earlier 01 is often the better value per seat. Compare at least three similar cars before you make an offer.

Sand and rough tracks in an AWD ROX 01

ROX designed the 01 with off road driving in mind, and some owners do take the all wheel drive versions onto sand. If that is how you want to use your car, it is your decision as the owner. Drop the tyre pressures before you leave the tarmac, take a recovery kit and a compressor, and never go out alone.

Soft sand drains the battery quickly and keeps the petrol engine running, so set off with a full charge and a full tank. Read the warranty for anything it says about off road damage first.

What to check on a used ROX 01

These are the checks that matter most on this car:

• Ask for a battery health report from the official service centre.

• Drive it on battery alone, then let the battery drop and listen for the petrol engine starting smoothly.

• Test every screen, camera and parking sensor.

• Compare the odometer reading with the kilometres stamped at each service.

• Look at the underbody, the sills and the door seals for sand and scrapes.

• Run the chassis number through the distributor for the service record and any recalls.

Dealer, trader or private seller

A dealer car usually costs a little more and often comes with an inspection report, a short dealer warranty and help with the transfer. A trader sits in between. A private seller is often the cheapest route, and you get to ask the person who drove the car every day how it was charged and where it went.

Whoever is selling, ask the same questions: was it charged at home, has it been off road, has it had any paintwork, and is there a full service record. The answers matter more on this car than on most, because battery use and sand both leave marks you cannot always see.

Factory warranty and the battery on a second hand 01

The warranty on the battery and electric drive is often set separately from the cover on the rest of the car, with its own time and distance limits. Whether either passes to you depends on the terms and on the car having been serviced on schedule. Give the chassis number to the official service centre and get the remaining cover confirmed in writing before you pay.
